Janjivan Bureau / New Delhi: Bhartiya Janta Party( BHP ) President Amit Shah referred to Mahatma Gandhi as ‘chatur baniya’, Congress mere “special purpose vehicle” for freedom. Taking a jibe at BJP president Amit Shah for his comment on Mahatma Gandhi, Gopalkrishna Gandhi said on Saturday that Gandhi would have laughed at the ‘chatur baniya’ description of him. Taking strong exception to BJP president Amit Shah’s comment on Mahatma Gandhi, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today demanded that he withdraw it and apologise to the country. The Congress slammed the remarks and asked the BJP president to apologise.
“He should withdraw his comment and apologise for it.
It is a deliberate act. It is unfortunate, uncalled for and unethical,” she told reporters here.
“Gandhiji is the father of the nation and he is an icon of the world. No one should think that he can say anything only because he is in power”, she said.
In a tweet, Banerjee said, “When we, in public life, speak about icons of our nation and the world, we must always show utmost respect and sensitivity with language”.
The former West Bengal governor said that the remark has been made by Shah in ‘utter tastelessness’ and it reveals the hidden mischief behind the remark. He said, “Gandhi would have laughed at ‘chatur baniya’ description but for its “utter tastelessness and the hidden mischief in it.”
