Janjivan Bureau / NEW DELHI: There was a massive uproar in Rajya Sabha Today after Samajwadi leader Naresh Agarwal made a controversial remark during the debate on lynching in the name of cow protection.
The BJP and other NDA members rushed towards the Well of the House shouting slogans demanding an apology from the SP leader for his remarks.
“Agrawal is liable to prosecution if he has made it outside the House. He should apologise and withdraw the comment,” Finance Minister Arun Jailtley said.
Some members deemed Agarwal’s remarks to be offensive towards religious sentiments of a community.
Deputy Chairman PJ Kurien said Agarwal should not have made these remarks which “per se are derogatory” and should withdraw them. He ordered that the statement should be expunged from the records of the House.
With the ruling members stalling the house, Naresh Agarwal was forced to withdraw his remarks.
However, the Samajwadi Party ruled out an apology.
“Agarwal has withdrawn the remark and no question of apologising arises. He won’t apologise even if the session goes on like this,” Yadav said.
Earlier, the issue of killings in the name of cow protection reverberated in the house with the opposition creating noisy scenes after government said the states have all the powers to deal with such incidents and there was no need to change the existing law.
