Renuka Chowdhury moves privilege motion against Kiren Rijiju for video Congress MP Renuka Chowdhury The breach of privilege was moved against Kiren Rijiju for sharing on Facebook a post mocking her laughter after PM Modi joked about it in the Rajya Sabha. In fact, the post had a video clip from the 1980s series “Ramayana”, in which the mythical character Surpanakha cackles loudly. Later in the video was a clip from the Rajya Sabha, when PM Modi took a dig at Ms Chowdhury for laughing loudly in the middle of his speech. Rijiju removed the post from his Facebook page on Thursday, but on Twitter, he posted the Rajya Sabha video without the Ramayana clip.
“This is highly objectionable and I am going to file a privilege motion (in Rajya Sabha),” Chowdhury told reporters minutes after Rijiju posted the video of the prime minister’s remarks.
Rijiju replied, “Renuka ji, I fail to comprehend in which way did I insult the women dignity? I merely referred to PM’s equanimity.” What is a parliamentary privilege? These are a set of rights, privileges and immunities provided to Parliament and Members of Parliament without which they cannot perform their functions efficiently and effectively. The objective of parliamentary privilege is to safeguard the freedom, the authority and the dignity of Parliament. Parliamentary privilege, however, do not exempt MPs from obligations to society which apply to other citizens as well. It may be recalled that the BJP moved a privilege motion against Congress president and Amethi MP Rahul Gandhi in Rajya Sabha for “twisting” the Finance Minister’s name.
