Janjivan Bureau / New Delhi : More than 300 EVM malfunctioning in Uttar Pradesh Kairana Loksabha constituency. Opposition parties knock the door of Election Commission. Bypolls in Maharashtra’s Palghar and Bhandara-Gondiya parliamentary constituencies are witnessing key contests where the BJP is fighting to come back. The counting of votes is on Thursday.
Here is your 10-point cheatsheet to the by-elections in 10 states:
Calling the reports of largescale voting machine malfunction “an exaggeration”, the commission said it is taking steps to correct it. In a statement, the Commission also denied reports of polls being cancelled in 35 booths in the Bhandara-Gondiya Parliamentary Constituency in Maharashtra, saying they were “incorrect”.
In Kairana, RLD candidate Tabassum Hassan filed a complaint alleging that around 150 voting machines were malfunctioning. The biggest polling station of the constituency is seeing a sluggish pace of voting after over 10 voting machines stopped working. Till 6 pm, over 54% voting was recorded, UP’s Chief Electoral Officer said.
The BJP has fielded Mriganka Singh, daughter of Hukum Singh whose death made the election necessary. The chief minister, his deputy and some of the top ministers have campaigned relentlessly in face of the opposition challenge. On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a public meeting in Baghpat, close to the Kairana constituency and spoke of issues that the opposition alleges is a breach of the model code of conduct.
The opposition parties are expecting their network to deliver Dalit, Muslim and Jat votes to Tabassum Hasan. It expected to recreate the successes in Gorakhpur and Phulpur, seats earlier held by UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and his deputy Keshav Prasad Maurya. Mayawati’s support to the Samajwadi Party candidate had delivered easy victory in both seats in the recent by-polls.
Bypoll to Palghar Lok Sabha seat in Maharashtra has added further tension to the strained ties between the Shiv Sena and the BJP. After the Shiv Sena gave a ticket to the son of a sitting BJP lawmaker who died earlier this year, the BJP fielded former Congress minister Rajendra Gavit, who joined the party earlier this month.
Over 76 per cent polling was reported on Monday in the bypoll to the Shahkot Assembly seat in Punjab.
Polling, which began at 7 am, continued even after the 6 pm deadline as voters who had queued up earlier were allowed to cast their vote.
The turnout was 76.6 per cent as against the polling percentage is 78.6 in the previous assembly elections.
There was no report of any violence from anywhere in the constituency.
“The polling has been peaceful,” an official said.
However, four voter-verifiable paper audit trail (VVPAT) machines and a control unit were replaced at some polling booths after the devices developed malfunctioning during the mock polling, he added.
While the ruling Congress party in the state is hoping to maintain its winning momentum, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) is aiming to retain the seat.
The bypoll was necessitated following the demise of Shahkot’s Akali MLA Ajit Singh Kohar in February.
The Congress has fielded Hardev Singh Laddi, while the SAD has given ticket to Kohar’s son, Naib Singh Kohar. Rattan Singh Kakkar Kalan of the AAP is also in the fray.
While casting their votes, both Laddi and Kohar exuded confidence that they would win the bypoll.
As many as 1,72,676 voters will decide the fate of 12 candidates, who are in the fray.
Of the 236 polling booths in the constituency, webcasting will be held at 103.
On the Akali Dal’s allegations that vehicles bearing registration number of other states were seen moving in the constituency, Raju said the teams concerned were constantly following up on the matter, but nothing was substantiated as yet.
The Election Commission (EC) has deployed a total of 1,022 security personnel, including six companies of the Border Security Force (BSF), in Shahkot, an official said, adding that 1,416 polling staff have been deployed for the bypoll.
Electronic voting machines (EVMs) and VVPAT machines are being used at all the polling stations.
Shahkot is known to be a pocket borough of the Akali Dal. Kohar was a five-time MLA from the constituency.
The main opposition, Aam Aadmi Party, which had faced a humiliating defeat in the Gurdaspur Lok Sabha bypoll and the civic polls in the state, is desperately looking for a victory in Shahkot.
In last year’s election to the 117-member Punjab Assembly, the Congress had won 77 seats, while the SAD-BJP alliance had won 18. The AAP had won 20 seats, while the Lok Insaf Party had bagged the remaining two seats.
