Janjivan Bureau / New Delhi : The Delhi Commission for Women has rescued 16 Nepalese girls from a house in Munirka from where they were on the verge of being trafficked to Gulf countries.
As per a statement by DCW, at 1.30 am on Wednesday the DCW received a tip-off about the girls who were brought to Delhi on the pretext of employment, but were confined in a small room for several days.
The DCW teams, along with the police, reached the spot and rescued the girls, said a commission official. Their passports had been stolen by the traffickers.
DCW chairperson Swati Maliwal appealed to Home Minister Rajnath Singh to fix accountability of Delhi Police and ensure that the top bosses running such trafficking rackets are booked.
“Our team reached the spot and we called the police and rescued 16 girls who were about to be trafficked to the Gulf region. The girls were very disturbed. The question arises if DCW gets to know about such rackets operating here just 500 metres way from the (Vasant Vihar) police station why can’t the police nab them. It is time the police’s accountability is fixed,” said DCW chief Swati Maliwal who on Wednesday morning met Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi.
The traffickers had been running this racket at this location for the past eight months and seven girls are learnt to have been already sent abroad in the last 15 days.
