Janjivan Bureau / New Delhi : The last rites of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee will take place at 4 pm today at Rashtriya Smriti Sthal in New Delhi.
The gun carriage carrying the mortal remains of former prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee was received by senior BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and chief Amit Shah, at the BJP headquarters.
Personnel of Armed Forces carried him inside the party headquarters where thousands of admirers and cadres had started gathering since morning to catch one last glimpse of their beloved leader.
Officials of the Army, Navy and Air Force had kept a vigil by his side through the night at his 6 Krishna Menon Marg residence. His mortal remains were taken to the party headquarters on a gun carriage–an ultimate mark of respect to the statesman.
People who queued up to pay respects had come from not just Delhi but from Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.
The first person to pay respects to the late leader at the BJP headquarters was Shah, followed by other senior leaders. As UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath has already said his ashes will be immersed in the rivers of the state.highlights
The body of the BJP veteran was earlier kept at his official residence — 6 A Krishna Menon Marg and was later taken to the BJP headquarters at Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg where senior leaders, including PM Modi and Amit Shah, paid their tributes. In view of the funeral procession, the Delhi Traffic Police has issued an advisory asking citizens to take alternate routes.
