Mumbai: In a case that perhaps could have been avoided, a 65-year-old patient in Sion hospital in Mumbai died when a doctor operating on him had a panic attack and the replacement doctor made a mistake.
The report added that after the operation began, a first-year resident doctor, who was operating on the patient, suffered from a panic attack and “ran away from the ward”.
The replacement doctor, according to an informal internal investigation, punctured the patient’s left lung instead of his right lung, due to which the patient died.
“There were no seniors around. It was visible that something was wrong. My father immediately started complaining of breathing difficulty. He was shifted to his bed soon after and put on oxygen support. He died within 15 minutes,” patient’s son Rahul said.
Dean of the hospital, Dr ND Moulick, said that the incident of was a case of ‘human error’ and not something caused by stress or work pressure. The report added that the ward, with 84 patients, was being manned by only two resident doctors.
