Janjivan Bureau / Lucknow : The Allahabad High Court on Monday declared the inter- caste marriage of BJP MLA Rajesh Misra’s daughter Sakshi Misra to Ajitesh Kumar as ‘valid’.
According to the couple’s lawyer, Ajitesh was beaten up by some “people wearing black coats” outside the High Court just before the hearing.
Taking cognizance of this development, Justice Siddhartha Verma asked Ajitesh and Sakshi to remain seated in court as he summoned police officials to provide protection to the couple.
Justice Verma also reprimanded the father and BJP MLA from Bithari Chainpur in Bareilly for the attack. He said that Sakshi and Ajitesh were adults and hence had the right to choose their life partners.
The couple’s counsel said that despite the court’s order for protection Ajitesh had been singled out and beaten up within the High Court premises.
Prayagraj SSP Atul Sharma, however, denied that the couple had been assaulted.
The couple had reportedly eloped from their homes on July 3 and got married at a temple in Prayagraj on July 4.
The couple has remained on the run since then and the Bareilly police had reportedly not provided them protection despite requests.
Finally on July 9 they posted a video which went viral on the social media in which Sakshi and Ajitesh claimed that they faced a death threat from Sakshi’s father.
The couple said that the BJP MLA was ‘unhappy’ with their marriage as Sakshi was a Brahmin and Ajitesh a Dalit.
However, the MLA came up with his version claiming that he was not opposed to the marriage due to caste differences.
He said that his only concern was that there was an age difference between the couple and that Ajitesh had no proper source of income.
The couple later appeared on a news channel in Delhi in which Sakshi said that her brother and her father’s associates had been bullying them.
The Prayagraj priest had also denied marrying them and even claimed that their marriage certificate was fake.
