Assam: Due to apathy of state CM Tarun Gogoi and negligence of party high command at least nine rebel Congress MLAs announced to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday.
All the rebel MLAs met BJP President Amit Shah in New Delhi today. Later, BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma said that 9 MLAs have met the top brass to exhibit their confidence to the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Sarma, who is close to these rebels Congress legislators, said that Assam BJP leadership will decide the formal date of their joining.
Jayanta Malla Baruah, one of the rebels Congress MLA said that they have informally become BJP member in front the BJP President.
The Assam Congress suspended 4 of them and served show cause to another 5 MLAs for anti-party activities. As of now, the Congress has 78 MLAs in the 126 member state assembly.
Former Congress Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who recently joined BJP, also announced that he will quit as a member of state assembly within a day or two.
Meanwhile, senior Congress leader C P Joshi will arrive in Guwahati today to discuss various issues of the state Congress.
