Janjivan Bureau / Chandigarh : Four children, aged between four and six years, were killed after a school bus of a private school with 12 students onboard caught fire at Longowal town in Sangrur district in Punjab on Saturday. The van was carrying 12 students.
Sources said there were four deaths, though there was no official word on it.
Deputy Commissioner Ghanshyam Thori said he had sent the Sangrur SDM and Tehsildar to the spot.
SSP Sandeep Garg also rushed a police team to the school.
Sangrur civil hospital authorities have deputed a team of doctors to provide treatment to the injured.
Member of Parliament Bhagwant Mann and Sunam’s Aam Aadmi Party Member of Legislative Assembly Aman Arora have reached the accident site.
Meanwhile, angry residents have refused to allow the district administration to remove the bodies from the school van.
Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident.
He said in a tweet: “Very sad to learn of the news from Sangrur, where we lost 4 children because their school van caught fire. Injured have been rushed to the hospital. DC & SSP Sangrur are on the spot & I have ordered a magisterial enquiry. Guilty will be strictly punished”.
