Social organisations to pay attention towards the service of society like Sulabh-Amitabh Kant

Janjivan Bureau / NEW DELHI: The CEO of Niti Ayog Amitabh Kant lauded the contribution of Sulabh International for initiating toilet revolution in Indian in the last fifty years. He showered rich praise on the NGO while speaking at a function on the occasion of the golden jubilee celebration of Sulabh here on Thursday.
Mr. Kant said that it’s a true example of Gandhiji’s ideology and Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak turned it into action. He urged other social organisations to pay attention towards the service of society.
Sulabh International – an NGO founded by Dr Pathak in 1970 – completes its 50 years of public service this year. To celebrate this momentous occasion, the organisation held a photo exhibition that chronicles the journey of Sulabh, which has – over the five decades – emerged as one of the largest sanitation movement in the world.
Speaking on the occasion Dr.Pathak appreciated the efforts of thousands of Sulabh volunteers for helping him to achieve such a remarkable feat.
Founded by Dr. Pathak, Sulabh’s contribution in the field of sanitation is both monumental in scale and historical in its application of human rights framing to sanitation.
The photo exhibition showcases the extraordinarily journey of grit, toil and perseverance of one man’s mission in promoting affordable sanitation and hygiene in rural India over the last five decades. It also highlight other initiatives in the areas women’s economic empowerment and for welfare of the widows.
Sulabh Sanitation Movement, which was inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, is – by far – one of the largest sanitation movements in the world. It is unique because it has uses toilet as a means of achieving social cohesion and mainstreaming the marginalised communities.
In 2019, the government of India awarded Sulabh with the Gandhi Peace Prize (2016) for its contribution in improving sanitation situation in India and for emancipation of manual scavengers.
Recognised globally as a sanitation pioneer, Dr Pathak has won many awards worldwide for his inspiring work – notably among them are the Padma Bhushan in 1991 and the Stockholm Water Prize in 2009.
Dr. Pathak beats poverty and caste barrier to emerge as the Champion Of Sanitation and Sulabh became one of the popular indigenous brand names during 50 years.It’s tireless efforts of thousands of volunteers under the dynamic leadership of Dr. Pathak.
A large number of liberated scavenger women, widows from Vrindavan and Varanasi, school children and sanitation experts took part in the celebrations.
The programme was attended by a number bof senior government officials. Former governor Mr. BP singh also expressed his opinion on the occasion.
