Janjivan Bureau / Patna : Bihar Director General of Police Gupteshwar Pandey, a 1987 batch IPS officer, took voluntary retirement from services on Tuesday.
Mr. Pandey is likely to contest upcoming state assembly elections as a ruling NDA candidate either from Buxar or Shahpur assembly constituency.
Mr. Pandey was to retire from services on February 28, 2021. On January 31, 2019 Mr. Pandey was appointed as Director General of state police.
Earlier in 2009 too, Mr. Pandey had opted for Voluntary retirement to contest the Lok Sabha poll but when he failed to get ticket he rejoined his services after few months.
Late on Saturday evening, the state home department issued the notification granting voluntary retirement for Mr. Pandey effective from September 22, 2020 afternoon under the provisions of All India Services (Death-cum-Retirement Benefits) Rules, 1958.
The notification also gave additional charge to of state DGP to Director General (home guard and fire services) Mr. S.K. Singhal in place of Mr. Pandey.
Earlier, Mr. Pandey was examined by CBI in an abduction case of a 12-year old girl from Muzaffarpur town Navruna Chakravarty in September 2012. At that time Mr. Pandey was Inspector General of Police of Tirhut area under which Muzaffarpur district falls.
Navruna’s father Atulya Chakravarty had alleged that abduction of her little daughter was part of a land mafia ploy to grab his prime land in Muzaffarpur town and Mr. Pandey is also one of the accused in the case.
The Navruna case is currently monitored by Supreme Court of India and the investigating agency CBI was granted over 10 extensions to complete the probe.
Mr. Pandey, of late, had hit headlines because of his media statements on the death of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput.
“Rhea Chakaraborty does not have aukat (stature) to make any comment on the Bihar chief minister”, Mr. Pandey who hails Bihar CM Nitish Kumar as his margdarshak (guide and guardian), told media persons when Ms. Chakraborty had claimed that Sushant Singh Rajput’s case in Bihar was driven by political motivations in light of upcoming state assembly elections.
Mr. Pandey has also been active on social media with over 7 lakh followers.
Another IPS officer of the state Sunil Kumar who had retired from his services on July 31, 2020 too is likely to contest assembly elections, due in October-November this year, from Bhore assembly constituency in Gopalganj district.
