New Delhi: The meat that the mob found in Akhlaq’s fridge and which they claimed was the proof they needed to lynch him was mutton, not beef. After the brutal murder of Akhlaq, the police had sent the meat sample to a vet for preliminary testing. But the police, to be sure, sent the meat for testing to a Mathura lab and the results said that the meat found in Akhlaq’s fridge was not beef, but mutton.
Akhalaq, a 50-year-old local resident and his son were severely beaten up by a mob that alleged that they had slaughtered a calf and eaten the beef in their home. While Akhlaq died, his son was in a serious condition. The September 28 incident has triggered a huge outcry across the country.
A report sent by the Uttar Pradesh government to the Union Home Ministry said Akhlaq and his son Danish were attacked by some unidentified people over unconfirmed allegations of having consumed “pratibandhit pashu ka maans” (meat of an animal banned from slaughter).
As the opposition had been crying hoarse demanding a statement from the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi broke his silence on the gruesome murder and said the fight should be against poverty and not against each other.
“Hindus and Muslims should work together to fight poverty and not against each other. The country has to stay united. Only communal harmony and brotherhood will take the nation forward,” said Modi while addressing an election rally in Bihar’s Nawada.
