Janjivan Bureau / New Delhi : The first meeting of the joint opposition to discuss the presidential candidate for the July 18 election ended on Wednesday evening with representatives of all 17 attending outfits requesting Nationalist Congress party chief Sharad Pawar to run for the post.

Party leaders said after Sharad Pawar declined the offer he was again urged towards the end of the meeting to reconsider the same.
In conclusion, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee who had convened the meeting proposed the names of Mahatma Gandhi’s grandson Gopalkrishna Gandhi and national conference patron Farooq Abdullah among other potential consensus candidates for the election to the highest constitutional office of India.
